Job Description

 

 

 

POSITION PURPOSE

 

Assumes responsibility for assisting a journeyman in assembling, installing, and repairing pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and welding or plumbing codes.  Assists in maintaining parts inventory, completes work order records, and files all related paperwork.  Assists area staff as required, responds to special requests.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Job Tasks for Apprentice Welder / Fitter

  • Assists Journeyman who laying out, positioning, and securing parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Cuts workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
  • Melts lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.
  • Installs or repairs equipment, such as lead pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings.
  • Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Removes rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • Primarily uses stick welding 60-10 and 70-18. 
  • Need to be able to certify in 6G position.
  • We prefer persons with pipe fitting and boiler experience.

 

Assumes responsibility for maintaining related records.

  • Documents test and inspection dates and results.
  •  Maintains inventory records for welding supplies used and utilized on jobs.
  • Completes work orders, lists materials issued and used, and documents work repairs.

 

Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with area staff and with management.

  • Assists area staff as needed.
  • Ensures that management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.

 

Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

  • Ensures regulatory requirements and established procedures are met.
  • Follows safety requirements.
  • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

  • Assignments are completed in accordance with engineering specifications and codes.  Work is completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Work equipment is well maintained and in good operating condition.  Unscheduled downtime is minimized. 
  • Problems and malfunctions are promptly addressed and resolved.
  • Maintenance records, work orders, and inventory logs are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Established safety and regulatory requirements are adhered to.
  • Management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems. 
  • Good communication and coordination exist with area staff and departments.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:       

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Journeyman License/ Previous OTJ Experience
  • If you are an apprentice you must be enrolled in the apprenticeship course or taking welding classes at a local college.

Required Knowledge:             

  • Knowledge of heating, water and drainage system pipes, fittings, and fixtures.
  • Knowledge of building blueprints and schematics.

Experience Required:                     

  • One to two years of related experience.
  • Pass Pre-Employment Drug Screening
  • Pass Insurance Pre-Employment Driving Record Screening

Skills/Abilities:                            

  • Able to work well independently.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Solid hand/eye coordination.
  • Able to operate all related instruments and tools.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

STOOPING: Bending downward and forward at the waist.  Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling: Resting on knee or knees.

Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.

Crawling: Moving on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: For extended time periods.

Walking: Especially for long distances.

Pushing: Using upper body to press against something with steady force.

Pulling: Using upper body to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects.

Lifting: Use of upper body and back muscles to lift objects.

Finger dexterity: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.

Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.

Feeling: Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, etc. through touch.

Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Average hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Repetitive motions: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Average visual abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.

Physical strength: Medium work; exerting up to 100 lbs. occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently, and/or 20 lbs. constantly.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).
  • Work is performed both inside and outside.  Subject to weather.
  • The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system.

 

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Reasoning ability:

  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.

Mathematics ability:                 

  • Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs.

Language ability:                       

  • Ability to use a passive vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words; read at a slow rate; and define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling, and pronunciation.
  • Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and using adjectives and adverbs.
  • Ability to communicate in complex sentences, using normal word order with present and past tenses and good vocabulary.
