Job Description

 

The technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and updating oil and gas burners at various customer locations throughout the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.  Adjust and install various temperature controls and devices.  Working knowledge of electrical circuits and troubleshooting.  Fire and adjust burners for maximum efficiency.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

  • Assumes responsibility for effectively completing boiler burner startups and maintenance.
    • Troubleshoots malfunctions in electrical circuits as necessary.  Inspects wiring, checks connections and power sources, and logs repair needs.
    • Understands basic one pipe, and two pipe steam systems and hydronic systems.
    • Basic pump repair knowledge and skills, including but not limited to circulating pumps and oil pumps.
    • Installs and maintains motors, wiring, and all electrical equipment including control work for lighting, motors, and instrumentation. 
    • Restores power when failures have occurred and restarts and resets equipment as necessary.
    • Basic boiler burner troubleshooting skills, electrical and mechanical.
    • Follows all safety rules and procedures, and operates electrical equipment in accordance with established safety regulations and department policies.
    • General knowledge of domestic water systems including but not limited to instantaneous hot water heaters, tank type water heaters, booster pump systems, and domestic mixing valves, electrical and pneumatic.
    • Knowledge of various Honeywell, Fireye and other burner contols. 
    • Knowledge of burner oil systems.
    • General knowledge of various burners such as Gordon Piatt, Powerflame, Webster, and Iron Fireman  as examples.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining related records.
    • Documents test and inspection dates and results, including but not limited to fire and adjust printouts, amperage readings on motors, boiler room conditions.
    • Fills out time ticket appropriately with all required information such as material used, correct hours, and any further work needed. 
    • Completes work orders, lists materials issued and used, and documents work repairs.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with area staff and with management.
    • Assists area staff as needed.
    • Ensures that management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
    • Attends meetings as required.
    • Meets the electrical needs of different departments throughout the Company.
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
    • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
    • Sends out parts and instruments to external repair locations as needed.
    • Observes safety regulations and procedures.
    • Ensures adherence to regulatory requirements.
    • Completes special projects as assigned.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

  • Assignments are completed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and safety regulations.  New installations are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Heating and domestic hot water equipment is well maintained and in good operating condition.  Unscheduled downtime is minimized. 
  • Heating and domestic hot water problems and power failures are promptly addressed and resolved.
  • Maintenance records, work orders, and inventory logs are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems. 
  • Good communication and coordination exist with area staff and departments.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four years of related experience. 
  • Knowledge of burner wiring, circuitry, installation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of test equipment and electrical blueprints and schematics.
  • Thorough understanding of safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of boilers and hydronic and steam heating sytems.

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES:                           

  • Able to work well independently.  
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Solid hand/eye coordination.
  • Able to operate all related test equipment and electrical instruments and tools. 
  • Ability to pass Pre-Employment drug screening. 
  • Ability to pass Pre-Employment driving record screening.

  

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

CLIMBING:          Including ladders, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc.

STOOPING:         Bending downward and forward at the waist.  Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.

CRAWLING:        Moving on hands and knees or hands and feet.

REACHING:         Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

STANDING:         For extended time periods.

WALKING:           Especially for long distances.

PUSHING:            Using upper body to press against something with steady force.

PULLING:             Using upper body to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects.

LIFTING:              Use of upper body and back muscles to lift objects.

FINGER DEXTERITY:         Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.

GRASPING:          Using fingers and palm on an object.

FEELING:             Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, etc. through touch.

TALKING:             Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.

AVERAGE HEARING:         Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

REPETITIVE MOTIONS:    Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

AVERAGE VISUAL ABILITIES:         Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH:      Medium work; exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or 10 lbs. constantly.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).
  • Work is performed both inside and outside.  Subject to weather.
  • Must work under hazardous conditions including high places, chemical exposures, electrical current, moving machinery, exposure to blood, etc.
  • The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system.

 

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

REASONING ABILITY:       Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.  Able to interpret various instructions.

MATHEMATICS ABILITY:     Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:        Ability to use a passive vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words; read at a slow rate; and define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling, and pronunciation.   Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and using adjectives and adverbs.  Ability to communicate in complex sentences, using normal word order with present and past tenses and good vocabulary.
